SUBCULTURE

Balloon twisters practice shaping and sculpting balloons into any given form. Their designs range from balloon animals to balloon walls. They consider themselves artists; their preferred medium is balloons.

WHY TWISTERS?

Balloon twisters are misunderstood.  They’re not all clowns making balloon dogs. They're storytellers, who use twisting to express themselves and spread joy. My goal was to celebrate the passion they have for their art.

THREE FUN FACTS I LEARNED ABOUT TWISTERS

Twisting is unplanned.  None of my interviewees set out to be twisters - it just happened.

  • Mike became a telegram singer first, twister second
  • Deborah bought a twisting book for her nephew, then kept it for herself
  • Bill watched a Youtube video for his daughter's birthday, and the rest is history

Twisters "shed" balloons

  • Carrying so many balloons around at once means some get lost, and then found in weird places
  • Deborah says she finds balloons everywhere - sometimes in her bed!

Twisters are like Santa Clause

  • All day long they get to ask kids what balloon they want, make it in front of them, gift it to them, and watch the joy spread across their face
  • "There's nothing like it," says Deborah

WHAT I LOVED MOST ABOUT THIS CASE STUDY WAS

...using a different medium to bring a story to life.
